Oct. 30, 2003 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Booz Allen Classic is the new name of
the PGA TOUR's Washington, D.C., golf tournament, which will take place June
21-27, 2004 at the Tournament Players Club at Avenel for the 18th consecutive
year.
The tournament was introduced to the nation's capital in 1980 at
Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., where it remained for seven years
prior to moving down the road to the TPC at Avenel in 1987. The Booz Allen
Classic name and logo were approved Wednesday evening at a meeting of the
tournament's newly reconstituted Board of Governors.
The announcement follows the recent signing of McLean, Va.-- based Booz Allen
Hamilton, one of the world's largest consulting firms, as title sponsor of what
has become the biggest single sporting event in the Washington, D.C.,
metropolitan area, attracting more than 180,000 fans annually.
"We think the Booz Allen Classic name and accompanying logo provides the
right foundation for an event that for a quarter of a century has defined
professional golf in the U.S. national capital region and, we expect, is
destined for even greater success as an international classic in the years to
come," said Ralph Shrader, chairman and chief executive officer of Booz Allen
Hamilton Inc.
To date, the tournament has distributed nearly $8 million to more than 150
local and national charities in the Washington, D.C., area. Beginning with the
2004 Booz Allen Classic, tournament host Washington Golf Charities, a 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization formed in 2003 to host the Booz Allen Classic, and Booz
Allen Hamilton have committed to a goal of distributing at least $1 million
annually from tournament-related proceeds exclusively to Washington, D.C., area
charities.
The tournament, which this year had a tournament-record purse of $4.5
million, will continue to be managed by KemperSports Marketing as it has been
for the past 25 years. The Board also approved a number of other tournament
changes, including an updating of many of the tournament's hospitality areas at
Avenel.
