New Nationwide Tour Stop at Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson, WI, July 5-11, 2004
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Tom Lehman and the PGA TOUR today announced a three-year commitment to a new Nationwide Tour stop
at Troy Burne Golf Club, beginning the week of July 5, 2004. The Nationwide Tour develops golf's rising stars. Fifty-seven
percent of current PGA TOUR players, including Lehman, are Nationwide Tour alumni. All tournament proceeds will go to charity.
"The Scholarship America Showdown gives golf fans many reasons to be excited," Lehman said. "It offers an intimate glimpse
of the next generation of great golfers and will allow people to say 'I saw him when...'" Lehman also noted that every good
swing and pure putt a Nationwide Tour player makes is important because it is one step closer to a dream spot on the PGA TOUR.
Troy Burne will provide a challenging and picturesque venue for the Scholarship America Showdown. Located just over the
Wisconsin border in Hudson, it is sculpted out of 420 acres of rolling St. Croix Valley hills and features more than 120 bunkers
protecting bent grass fairways and stadium greens. Burne, the Scottish term for creek, is fitting as water comes into play
on eight holes.
"The Nationwide Tour is excited to bring this tournament to the Upper Midwest," said Bill Oakley, PGA TOUR director of
Tournament Business Affairs. "We recognize the passion for golf in this area and believe we'll be able to foster it with world
class golf in the coming years."
Fun Events With A Cause Scholarship America and the Children's Cancer Research Fund (CCRF) will share
proceeds from the Showdown equally. Minnesota-based Scholarship America is the nation's largest nonprofit, private sector
scholarship and educational support organization. CCRF is a leading non-profit organization committed to funding innovative
and progressive research in pursuit of a world free of childhood cancer. Lehman's previous charity tournaments have raised
more than $4.7 million for CCRF.
"Scholarship America is proud to partner with Tom Lehman in the Showdown," said Dr. William C. Nelsen, president of Scholarship
America. "The event will provide fans a unique golf experience and, most importantly, help aspiring students realize their
educational dreams."
Lehman is looking forward to working with Scholarship America while strengthening his tie to golf and charity. "Giving
back is at the heart of the PGA and Nationwide Tours," said Lehman. "Scholarship America could not be a better partner in
making that happen."
Nationwide Tour Owned and operated by the PGA TOUR, the Nationwide Tour consists of 30 events played
in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Prize money in 2003 is nearly $15 million and the top 20 money winners at
season's end qualify for the PGA TOUR in 2004. This is the first year of a five-year contract calling for Nationwide, one
of the world's largest insurance and financial services providers, to serve as the Tour's umbrella sponsor. To date, alums
of this Tour have won 133 PGA TOUR titles, including major championships this year by Jim Furyk and Shaun Micheel.
