    • Recap from Round 2: Tiger, Rory at The Open

Rory McIlroy took control of The Open Championship on Friday with his second consecutive 66 at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. At 12-under 132, he’s four shots ahead of Dustin Johnson, who fired 65 today.

McIlroy has made 13 birdies and just one bogey -- at his opening hole Friday -- in 36 holes this week, hitting 27 of 36 greens and averaging 333 yards per tee shot. He made birdie on three of his final four holes Friday.

He won his previous two majors by eight shots apiece (2011 U.S. Open, 2012 PGA). How will he handle this large lead?

“You’re battling yourself, you’re batting your emotions, your mind,” McIlroy said. “You don’t want to get ahead of yourself, you don’t want to look at what anyone else is doing. You want to control what you can control.”

Weather is one thing McIlroy can’t control, and it appears that some traditional Open weather is headed their way. There is a chance of heavy storms throughout Saturday and wind gusts up to 30 mph.

Six players – including Charl Schwartzel, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia and 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen – are tied for third, six shots behind McIlroy.

Tiger Woods started The Open with a 3-under 69, but wasn’t able to move into contention. He flirted with the cut line, instead. Woods played the first two holes Friday in 3 over par, then made 14 consecutive pars before making a triple-bogey at 17 and an important birdie on the par-5 18th. His 5-foot birdie putt on the final hole ensured he would make the weekend.

Woods struggled Friday to find the fairway with his driver. His second-round 77 left him at 2-over 146.

“I didn’t hit the driver very good today,” Woods said. “I was trying to be a little more aggressive with the wind the way it was today. I decided to take a little more on today and it didn’t work out.”
