    • Rose, Mickelson to play together at U.S. Open

Finished 1-2 last year at Merion Golf Club

The traditional U.S. Open grouping of the reigning U.S. Open, Open Championship and U.S. Amateur champions will have an extra storyline this year.

Justin Rose’s U.S. Open defense will begin at 7:51 a.m. Thursday on Pinehurst No. 2's 10th hole. Rose will play alongside Phil Mickelson, winner of the 2013 Open Championship, and U.S. Amateur winner Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Rose and Mickelson aren’t just reigning major champions. Rose beat Mickelson at last year’s U.S. Open, and in a crucial singles match at the 2012 Ryder Cup.

Last year’s U.S. Open was Mickelson’s record sixth runner-up in the championship, and one of his most heart-breaking. He took the lead after holing a 75-yard wedge shot on No. 10 in the final round, but two bogeys with wedges in his hand left him one shot behind Rose when he arrived at the 18th tee. Merion’s trying finishing hole didn’t yield a birdie over the weekend, and Mickelson made bogey after his last-ditch effort to chip in went well by the hole.

Rose played a crucial part in Europe's comeback at the 2012 Ryder Cup when he birdied the final two holes to defeat Mickelson.

Fitzpatrick, like Rose an Englishman, will turn pro after the U.S. Open.

Web.com Tour player Daniel Berger will hit the first tee shot off of the first tee, at 6:45 a.m. Thursday. Berger’s father, Jay, advanced to the Round of 16 in tennis’ U.S. Open while still attending Clemson.

    Some other notable groups:

-- The 7:18 a.m. and 7:29 a.m. tee times off the first tee feature six of the best players yet to win a major. Sergio Garcia, Jason Day and Brandt Snedeker will tee off in the first threesome, followed by FedExCup champion Henrik Stenson, Matt Kuchar and Lee Westwood.

-- The three U.S. Open champions preceding Rose will tee off at 7:40 a.m. off the first tee: Webb Simpson (2012), Rory McIlroy (2011) and Graeme McDowell (2010).

-- There will be an all-Georgia threesome at 8:02 a.m. off the 10th tee as Chris Kirk, Russell Henley and Brendon Todd play together. All three have won in the 2013-14 season. This group will immediately follow the Rose-Mickelson-Fitzpatrick group.

-- The Georgia trio will be followed by three of the game's young stars: Jordan Spieth, 20; Hideki Matsuyama, 22; and Rickie Fowler, 25. Matsuyama recently earned his first PGA TOUR title at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance.

-- The young guys will be followed by a group of oldies but goodies. U.S. Senior Open champion Kenny Perry, Champions Tour winner Jeff Maggert and 49-year-old Kevin Sutherland, who are teeing off at 8:24 a.m. Sutherland turns 50 on July 4.

-- The past three Masters champions – Bubba Watson (2012, ’14); Adam Scott (2013); and Charl Schwartzel (2011) – tee off at 1:25 p.m. off of the first hole.

-- That group will be followed by the three Open Championship winners before Mickelson. Ernie Els (2012); Darren Clarke (2011); and Louis Oosthuizen (2010) tee off of No. 1 at 1:36 p.m.

-- And finally, a group of three recent PGA Championship winners will come next. Jason Dufner (2013), Keegan Bradley (2011) and Martin Kaymer (2010) are scheduled to tee off No. 1 at 1:47 p.m. Kaymer also won this year’s THE PLAYERS Championship. McIlroy, the 2012 PGA Championship winner, is playing with the three U.S. Open champions preceding Rose.

-- The 1:25 p.m. tee time off of No. 10 will feature two Englishmen – Luke Donald and Paul Casey – and an English, two-time TOUR winner Harris English.

-- The 1:36 p.m. tee time is features a trio of long hitters: J.B. Holmes, Gary Woodland and Graham DeLaet.
