Players tend to spend a lot of time sporting outerwear at the British Open, but with forecasts calling for sunny skies next week, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy may have the opportunity to show off all four Nike outfits at Muirfield.
On Wednesday, Nike released apparel scripting for Woods, McIlroy and the rest of its athletes in the field at the British Open. While weather conditions are supposed to be favorable, Nike plans on giving players multiple options each day if things take a turn for the worse.
“We make sure our athletes have the base layers, Dri-FIT polos, cover-ups and outerwear so they are prepared for a round that could see four different seasons over 18 holes,” said Merritt Richardson, Nike Golf's VP of Global Golf Apparel and Footwear. “With our breathable, lightweight fabrics, layering is key without adding weight or bulk. Our athletes will be armed with the essentials so they don’t have to think about their apparel during their quest for a major championship trophy.”
With the exception of his traditional red shirt on Sunday, Woods' apparel at Muirfield is a mixture of subdued colors — black, Armory blue and grey. He'll also sport his signature TW '13 shoe in the black and white colorways.
McIlroy, on the other hand, will use the entire color wheel at the British Open with his four outfits — including a pair of green pants (he wore a similar pair at the U.S. Open) that will make him stick out from the crowd. He'll also wear four different versions of Nike's Lunar Control shoe.
