NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Jim Colbert loves the Toshiba Classic and showed it yet again in the first round of the tournament at Newport Beach Country Club.
Colbert, who won this event in 1996, shot his age for the third time on the Champions Tour, the second time at this event. The 71-year-old shot a 2-under 69 in the opening round.
It is the second time he has achieved this feat at this event. The first time Colbert shot his age on the Champions Tour was when he posted a 5-under 66 in the first round of the 2009 Toshiba.
Dave Stockton and Bruce Lietzke withdrew from the first round of the Toshiba Classic. Lietzke cited pain in his right shoulder and withdrew before the round. The shoulder affected Lietzke last year when he was forced to withdraw after 13 holes in the first round of the U.S. Senior Open. Stockton played five holes and withdrew with a bad back.
------ The par 3s were not nearly as nice to Peter Jacobsen in the opening round of the Toshiba Classic as they were in the pro am. Jacobsen eagled the No. 8 hole with his amateur playing partners, acing the 203-yard hole with a 3-iron. On Friday he made par on the hole, but made a quintuple bogey on No. 17, taking him from 1-under to 4-over par. He finished with a 5-over 76.
First-round co-leader Bobby Clampett's 6-under 65 was aided by a chip in on the sixth hole. Clampett drove over the green and from the left rough chipped in from 30 feet. He almost holed out for eagle on the following hole, hitting a 7-iron that came to rest in tap-in range. Co-leader Bernhard Langer also holed out. He got an eagle from 143 yards with a 8-iron on the sixth hole. He nearly had another eagle on 10 when he hit it to a foot.
Fred Couples made an interesting par on the 18th hole. Couples' drive was left into the rough and then his second shot had three trees in his sight and he hit one of them, the ball coming halfway back. His third shot went to the back of the green and he was able to two-putt from 30 feet to save his par on the par 5.
