Justin Thomas' lengthy eagle putt is the Shot of the Day
Justin Thomas recorded his fifth PGA TOUR win of the season at the Dell Technologies Championship and moved into second place in the FedExCup standings.
The 24-year-old was solid from tee-to-green, averaging 307.8 yards and hitting 70.83 percent of the greens in regulation at TPC Boston. However, it was Thomas' short game that wound up being the difference-maker during the final round.
Thomas led the field in scrambling for the tournament, getting up-and-down 95 percent of the time (20/21) while ranking eighth in Strokes Gained: Putting. Thomas uses an all-Titleist equipment setup, but his wedge setup is unique as it features two different Vokey models: SM5 (52 and 56 degrees) and SM6 (46 and 60 degrees).
"I honestly couldn't tell you why I use two different types of wedges," Thomas told PGATOUR.COM. "I trust [Titleist Tour rep] Aaron Dill and [master wedge craftsman] Bob Vokey and their insight. We've worked hard to get my loft, lie and bounce just right. I guess it just happens the best setup for me is with a combination of SM5 and SM6."
Thomas also made some big putts down the stretch with a Scotty Cameron X5 Flow Neck Prototype that's been in play since last year's THE NORTHERN TRUST. Thomas picked up more than 2.5 strokes on the field over the weekend with the high-MOI mallet.
"I was struggling and sometimes when you're struggling you just need something different and new," Thomas recalled of his decision to swap an Anser-style blade for the mallet. "I was like, let's just go with it. What am I gonna do, miss more putts? I may as well try the mallet. It's been great ever since then. It was just better for my stroke in terms of the weight and having the toe hang where it still feels like a blade. I tend to have a lot of toe rotation in my stroke, so minimizing that gives me more consistency."
