PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current NFL on CBS analyst Tony Romo will play the First Stage of the Web.com Tour’s Qualifying Tournament in Garland, Texas, at Firewheel at Garland Bridges Golf Club (Masters/Champion nines), September 25-28. Site selections for players competing in First Stage were emailed on Monday afternoon from PGA TOUR headquarters.
“I’m excited to be playing in Dallas for the next stage of Q-School,” said Romo. “I know it’s going to be tough to advance to the next stage with so many talented players, but I love competing against the best and having to be at your best when you need it. That’s why we love sports. Let’s see what happens!”
On August 31, Romo advanced through the pre-qualifying stage in Lantana, Texas, with rounds of 72-72-74—218 (2-over) to finish tied for 36th, allowing him to make it through on the number. The 38-year-old finished his day one shot out, but moved inside the cut line when Tomo Watanabe (even-par 216) was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
“The more you play, the more you put yourself in an environment with really good players, the better chance you’ll get a feel for what you’ve got to practice. Coming out here, I’ve been playing some pretty good golf, so I wanted to see where the game finished at the end of the summer,” Romo said after his round.
Romo entered the Qualifying Tournament as an amateur with a +0.4 handicap through the Texas Golf Association. Per Web.com Tour regulations for the Qualifying Tournament, amateurs can compete provided their handicap index does not exceed 2.0. He may turn professional at any point through the qualifying process, and therefore become eligible for tournament earnings available at Final Stage, should he make it.
Romo, the Cowboys’ starting quarterback from 2006 through 2014, competed in the PGA TOUR’s Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship on a sponsor’s exemption in March of this year, posting rounds of 77-82—159 to miss the cut. He attempted to qualify for the 2018 U.S. Open in April but carded a 5-over-par 77 at Gleneagles Country Club in Plano, Texas, and failed to secure one of the eight sectional qualifying spots. Romo has also competed in several amateur and celebrity tournaments, winning the American Century Championship in July after defeating Mark Mulder by three points in the Modified Stableford event.
The field size in Garland will be approximately 78 players, with no reduction (cut) of field. Approximately 360 qualifying positions plus ties will be available for First Stage contestants to advance to the second qualifying stage, set to begin October 30 – November 2. The number of applicants advancing from each site will be on a pro rata basis (i.e., approximately the same percentage of players from each site will advance), and such number will be announced after the final number of contestants is determined.
