Against all kinds of conventional wisdom on good luck, Chesson Hadley swapped out his old Odyssey putter (the No. 5 model) for the 2-Ball model just weeks after his victory at the LECOM Health Challenge.
He admitted he thought he could putt better with the other model, and this week he was proven correct, as he captured the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Kraft Nabisco by one shot Sunday, saying his putting was ‘so good.’
“I won in New York with an Odyssey No. 5, but I switched to the 2-Ball in Springfield, Missouri, and I putted so well there. This week I felt like I hit a lot of good putts and it’s kind of weird … you win a golf tournament with a certain kind of putter, you hold on to it for a while, but I switched a few weeks after that and I felt like I could putt better,” he said.
Hadley hit nearly 95 percent of his greens this week as well, saying his Titleist woods and irons were key in helping set up a great week on the greens.
Heading into Sunday’s final round, Hadley, who ended up leaping to No. 1 on The 25 combined money list with his win, was five shots back.
“I was within striking distance, but there were a lot of guys I had to beat to leapfrog and get into first place. The course wasn’t playing easy. The greens are so fast and they were firm and the pins were in some tough spots, but I hung in there,” he explained.
Hadley said he received a putting tip from Chris Wilson with respect to how he reads putts, and that helped him to putt much better than he had been of late. With a smile, he said that although what he did – swapping out a hot putter for a different one – is unconventional, it was the right thing to do.
“I’ve putted with a 2-Ball or No. 5 since I’ve been a pro and I felt like I could putt better. I did not putt badly in New York and I played really well. You shouldn’t change things, but I did, like an idiot, and it worked out,” he said.
