Martin Piller knows what it takes to win on the Web.com Tour.
In fact, he’s done it six times, just one off the all-time record for wins on Tour.
But that doesn’t mean that it gets any easier when he’s in contention.
Sunday, however, he proved that he still knows exactly what it takes to come out on top, notching a one-shot victory at the Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae over Brandon Harkins.
Piller, who moves to 24th on the money list with his win, had missed four cuts in a row before turning in a T21 finish last week at the Digital Ally Open. Despite the fact that he wasn’t seeing the weekend, he had a feeling good things were coming.
“I didn’t change anything in my swing and I didn’t change anything in my short game or putting. I was missing cuts, but I was missing them by one or two shots, so I knew I wasn’t missing them by way out. I felt like I was playing good golf, but I just wasn’t getting anything out of it,” he said. “I was pretty confident in my game, even through that stretch. I didn’t change anything. My game was good; there was just something not quite clicking. But I played well last week and then got off to a great start this week.”
Piller explained his putting was the key to finding the winner’s circle in California.
“With putting … it’s kind of contagious,” he said. “You see a couple go in and it snowballs in the right direction for you. I started putting well last week and it continued into this week.”
