Of all the things, it was the tweak of Lanto Griffin’s left thumb that was the difference this week at the Nashville Golf Open Benefitting the Snedeker Foundation.
On his 11th hole Saturday, in the midst of a 10-under 62, Griffin, who says his thumb position is one of the keys to his putting, was happy to have something finally click with the flat stick.
“I had a 30-footer for birdie and rolled it in and I felt like I was going to make every putt,” Griffin explains. “I chipped in twice and I just felt really comfortable.”
Although Griffin missed a short putt in regulation that would have sealed the deal, he made up for it in the first playoff hole, nailing an 18-footer for birdie, and the win.
“When I had that putt on 18, I knew a lot of the pressure was already off because I knew if I missed it, it was still going into a playoff and that was awesome. I tried to look at it that way. I made a really good putt on 18 and it just soft-lipped out. When I went to the playoff, I just tried to put that behind me, and, win or lose, a solo second was pretty good after making the cut on the number,” he says.
Griffin became the first Web.com Tour winner since Justin Bolli in 2004 to make the cut on the number and win, as he was nine back going into the third round Saturday.
