SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Standing on the 18th fairway, Mackenzie Hughes had one shot, one opportunity, to make some history.
With a sand wedge in his hand and 108 yards to the hole, Hughes hit the wedge of his life to a foot and a half.
“That is the moment of my career thus far,” said Hughes. “That whole back nine, there were some moments there where I needed to hit a shot and make a putt, and I did.”
On the previous hole, the Canadian had curled in a 12-foot putt to save par and he admitted he didn’t realize how big of a par that was until he saw Richy Werenski make an eagle on the 72nd hole to tie him for the lead.
“I thought that was the biggest putt of my life until that 1-footer on the last,” explained Hughes. “I was so relieved when I got up there and it was a foot. I was just so happy.”

Hughes would go on to make the 18-inch putt on the par-5 18th for birdie and the win.
“I just felt good with the putter in my hand. And when you’re leading the tournament, that’s a good feeling to have,” he stated.
