Stephan Jaeger's week at the Ellie Mae Classic could not have been much better. It's quite possible that it couldn't have been any better.
The 27-year-old, German-born pro entered the week at TPC Stonebrae outside the top 100 on the money list, then fired a mind-boggling, four-round total of 30 under to win his first career Web.com Tour title by seven shots over Rhein Gibson.
Not only did Jaeger move into The 25 with his title, but he did it in record fashion. His opening-round 58 was the best score ever recorded in a PGA TOUR-sanctioned event, and his four-round aggregate score of 250 was the all-time best on either the PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR Champions or Web.com Tour.
The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga alum set 18-hole, 36-hole, 54-hole and 72-hole Web.com Tour records in the process. That's what happens, after all, when you string together rounds of 58-65-64-63.
Jaeger entered the season with conditional status and steadily moved up in the reshuffle with a series of solid finishes. Now, at the very minimum, he's set on the Web.com Tour through the 2017 season. And he's suddenly positioned to earn a PGA TOUR card for the first time.
Stephan Jaeger's historical victory at the Ellie Mae Classic
"That putt on the last, it really opened up a different world. It's cool. It's really is," said Jaeger after signing for a final-round, 7-under 63.
"Having records like that, you can look back when you're done playing, it's a cool feeling to have. ... Weeks like this don't happen very often. You've just got to go back every day and do your best each day. This game will kill you if you get too far ahead of yourself.
"I'm just going to do what I do every week, and see what comes out."
What came out this week was some of the best golf ever played.
