RALEIGH, N.C. -- Rex Healthcare announced World Golf Hall of Fame member Hale Irwin and Carolina Hurricanes' Glen Wesley as co-chairs for the 2012 Rex Hospital Open. The Rex Hospital Open has been an area golf mainstay for more than two decades, and this year's tournament looks to be the best yet.

"We are very excited to have Hale and Glen join us as co-chairs for this event. Distinguished support from the PGA TOUR and the Carolina Hurricanes shows how important this event is to our community," said Carson Gilbert, tournament director of the Rex Hospital Open. "Hale and Glen bring great credibility and enhance visibility -- not only for Rex Healthcare and our desire to provide the best patient care, but to the Rex Hospital Open and our area as well."

Irwin is one of the few players in history to win three U.S. Opens and was one of the world's leading golfers for much of the 1970s and 1980s. In addition to his U.S. Open wins, Irwin has won 20 PGA TOUR and 45 Champion Tour events. Irwin was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992 and continues to be one of golf's most memorable players.

Glen Wesley, a retired ice hockey defenseman played in the NHL for 20 seasons, and spent time playing for the Boston Bruins, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Hartford Whalers. He followed the Whalers to Raleigh when they became the Carolina Hurricanes. After a Stanley Cup win and 10 seasons with the Hurricanes, Wesley retired from the ice but stayed with the organization and now serves as Director of Defensemen Development for the Hurricanes.

The Rex Hospital Open is an official week-long event on the PGA TOUR's Nationwide Tour. It will take place May 31 - June 3 at TPC Wakefield Plantation in North Raleigh. Rex charity golf has raised more than $6.2 million to support programs and services at Rex Hospital. Funds raised from the 2012 event will benefit Rex Cancer Care -- supporting patients from discovery through recovery.
