Albertsons Boise Open sets tournament charity record

BOISE, Idaho -- Mike Clawson, Albertsons president, Intermountain West Division, announced Wednesday at a luncheon hosted by Albertsons parent company SUPERVALU at The Boise Centre that donations from the 20th anniversary Albertsons Boise Open presented by Kraft tournament set a new tournament record, surpassing the MILLION DOLLAR mark again for the third straight year. A total of $1,235,363.50 was distributed to 92 Treasure Valley area non-profit organizations. The 2009 charity contribution is the tournament's largest single-year donation to charity in its 20-year history. Since its inception, the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Kraft has distributed more than $10.6 million to community organizations, making it the most successful in terms of charitable contributions among all Nationwide Tour tournaments.

Each year Albertsons and the tournament identify non-profit organizations through a grant application process to be designated as the tournament's primary beneficiaries. The 2009 primary beneficiaries collectively received $250,000. The primary beneficiaries include: BabySteps at St. Michael's Cathedral, Boise Public Schools Education Foundation, Children's Free Dental Clinic, Dustin's Paw of Idaho, Humphreys Diabetes Center, Learning Lab, Log Cabin Literary Center, The Boise Philharmonic Association, Inc., Treasure Valley Family YMCA and United Way of Treasure Valley. Each organization was presented with $25,000.

Albertsons and the tournament provided Boise area non-profit organizations with the opportunity to sell tournament tickets and retain 100 percent of the proceeds for their causes through the Sara Lee TICKETS Fore CHARITY? program. Additionally, Albertsons and Sara Lee provided a bonus pool of $50,000, which was distributed among the participating charities based on each charity's sales. Eighty-four (84) non-profit organizations participated in the Sara Lee TICKETS Fore CHARITY program and generated a record $904,363.50 in ticket sales in 2009.

The tournament and SUPERVALU also supported the men's and women's golf teams at both the University of Idaho and Boise State University. Each school received $5,000 donations from this year's tournament, totaling $10,000.

SUPERVALU and the tournament announced a donation of $16,000 to the Idaho Lacrosse Association.

Lastly, the tournament announced that Nationwide, the Tour's umbrella sponsor, provided the First Tee Chapter of Idaho with a $5,000 donation to aid in the First Tee's mission of impacting the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.

Owned and operated by the PGA TOUR, the Nationwide Tour completed its 20th season in 2009. Nationwide, one of the world's largest insurance and financial service providers, finished its seventh year as the umbrella sponsor of the Tour. The Top 25 money winners on the 2009 Nationwide Tour automatically earned playing privileges on the 2010 PGA TOUR. The PGA TOUR is headquarted in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

The Albertsons Boise Open presented by Kraft will return in 2010, September 13-19, at Hillcrest Country Club. The tournament will continue to be broadcast internationally on Golf Channel to more than 120 million subscribers. The tournament is managed by Jeff Sanders Promotions, based in Portland, Ore.
