  • Golf's best rivalries: Past, present, future

Wednesday night's Duke-North Carolina basketball game got me to thinking: What are the best rivalries in golf?

(Not that I consider Duke-North Carolina college basketball's best rivalry; I'd take Syracuse-Georgetown or Syracuse-UConn.)

Golf doesn't quite lend itself to rivalries the way other sports do, but there have been some through the years -- Ben Hogan vs. Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer vs. Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson, the U.S. vs. Europe, among others.

A few years ago, the editors of Golf Digest wrote about this very topic. Not surprisingly, Palmer vs. Nicklaus topped the list. The rivalry runs deep and extends outside the ropes, too.

Who will be golf's next rivalry?

Patrick Reed vs. an entire continent seems like a pretty safe bet, or perhaps it will be Rory McIlroy vs. Rickie Fowler -- if the latter starts winning more.

What do you think is the best rivalry in golf? What rivalry would you like to see in the future? Share your thoughts below.
