NAPA, Calif. -- Lee Westwood's good finish at the Frys.com Open can be credited to his observant caddie. Westwood was hitting balls after his first-round 73 at Silverado Resort when his caddie noticed that he was aimed well right of his target. Westwood shot 69-69-67 over the Frys.com Open's final three rounds to finish T12 at 10-under 278. He made eight birdies in the final round.
"I just haven't had the fundamentals right a good part of the year. My alignment has been poor," Westwood said. "You have to make compensations, so to sort that out on Thursday made a big difference. It stopped me from needing to make compensations in my swing. I was able to get my right side involved and get a better strike on the ball."
Westwood hasn't finished in the top 10 since a T6 at THE PLAYERS Championship. He was a captain's pick for Europe's Ryder Cup team, going 2-2-0 in its victory.
He'll next play the CIMB Classic and World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions before wrapping up his European Tour season.
"I wanted to get off to a faster start," Westwood said. "A couple good finishes in Malaysia and China, and I will have done what I set out to do. I want to finish (2014) off strong and give myself a platform to build off of."
