Notes: Sabbatini reverses fortunes

Rory Sabbatini, a native of South Africa who now lives in Dallas, hasn't had a particularly good start to the 2013-14 season. He's played in each of the first two events and has yet to break par -- posting a scoring average of 76.

Sabbatini bucked that trend in the first round at Kuala Lumpur, though. The six-time PGA TOUR winner shot a 67 in the first-round that left him tied for fourth, four strokes off the pace being set by Ryan Moore.

Sabbatini, whose last win came at the 2011 Honda Classic, tied for 28th at the 2011 CIMB Classic, which was his only other appearance in the event.
>>> This is the fourth CIMB Classic and two of the three previous winners are in the field this week at Kuala Lumpur Country CLub. Their wins came at The Mines Resort, though, and neither defending champ Nick Watney nor 2011 winner (and last year's runner-up) Bo Van Pelt fared too well.

Watney opened with a 75 and is tied for 65th while Van Pelt shot even par and is tied for 30th.

>>> Sergio Garcia had some high-powered company in the CIMB pro-am on Wednesday when he played with the queen of Malaysia, H.M. Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah Hamidun.

He did pretty well in the first round, too -- hitting all but one green in regulation to lead the field at 94.4 percent. Garcia's first-round 66 left him third.

"I think it's the kind of golf course (that I like)," Garcia said. "It's quite narrow. Not the longest, but you have to drive the ball well. I think I managed to do that fairly well for the most part today. My irons were quite good.

"I would have loved to make a couple more putts, but I hit some good putts that unfortunately didn't go in. But the greens are not very easy to read."
