Hurley gets in Shriners with top 10

By Sean Martin, PGATOUR.COM

SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- Billy Hurley was scheduled to play the Monday qualifier for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open one day after the Frys.com Open's final round. That won't be necessary.

Hurley earned a spot in the Shriners field with his top-10 finish at the Frys.com Open. He tied for ninth at 12-under 272 (69-66-69-68). Hurley and Will MacKenzie were the only 2013 Web.com Tour graduate to finish in the top 10 at the Frys.com Open.

Hurley's high finish has large implications for his second season on TOUR. The Web.com Tour graduates are periodically "reshuffled," i.e. re-ranked based on FedExCup points earned this season. Because they get into tournaments on a space-available basis, a higher ranking in their category means more starts.

"This was huge," Hurley said. "I pretty much set my year. I should be able to play almost everywhere. ... It's real big for me, especially looking at February. I don't know how much golf I'm going to play in February."

Hurley's wife is due with the couple's third child Feb. 13, the day of the first round of the Northern Trust Open.

The first re-shuffle takes place after the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, which concludes Nov. 17. Hurley made just eight of 27 cuts in his rookie TOUR season in 2012, including two top-10s.

"I really came into this week thinking, 'Man, I just really want to make the cut to start the year, get four days and play a solid tournament,'" Hurley said.
