Gonzales shoots 62 after losing card

By Sean Martin, PGATOUR.COM

SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- When we last saw Andres Gonzales, he was the focus of television cameras as he mourned his near-miss at the Web.com Tour Finals. He shot 9-under 62 on Friday at CordeValle to jump into contention at the Frys.com Open. Gonzales (74-62) was at 6-under 136 and five shots behind leader Brooks Koepka.

Gonzales missed his 2013-14 PGA TOUR card by less than $2,000 in the four-event Web.com Tour Finals after finishing eighth at the Web.com Tour Championship. He finished 51st in the Web.com Tour Finals priority ranking; the top 50 earned PGA TOUR cards. It was another eighth-place finish that got Gonzales into the Frys.com Open field.

Gonzales made just two of his first 16 PGA TOUR cuts in 2013. He needed a high finish at the Wyndham Championship, the final event before the FedExCup Playoffs, just to crack the top 200 in the FedExCup points list and qualify for the Web.com Tour Finals. He shot a final-round 64, slapping the railing of the scoring trailer in celebration, to finish eighth at the Wyndham.

He's in the Frys.com Open field because of that top-10 finish at the Wyndham, his first in 42 career TOUR starts. He made 10 birdies and one bogey Friday.
