Sammy is now a free squirrel

Davis Love III, assistant captain of the U.S. Team, returns the team's unofficial mascot to the wild on Friday morning.

DUBLIN, Ohio -- Sammy, the baby squirrel that U.S. assistant captain Davis Love III rescued from a near-cart accident on Thursday, has been released back into the wild.

The squirrrel spent most of the Four-ball competition riding on Love's lap in his cart. That is, until Tiger Woods' girlfriend Lindsey Vonn retrieved it from Love's pocket and surprised Woods by putting it on his back in a video that went viral overnight.

Love said Nicki Stricker decided on the somewhat androginous name since no one could confirm the squirrel's sex. It spent the night in a box before Love went out Friday morning and placed the "nest" and the squirrel in the crook of a tree limb.

"It was good luck until the break at least," Love said, referring to Thursday's weather delay where the U.S. led in five matches. "My dad always picked up sticks for good luck, and he told me I had to keep it as long as we were winning holes."

U.S. Captain Fred Couples was amused by his friend's new friend.

"I carry a rabbit's foot around a lot, I don't know much about a squirrel or a live squirrel, but it was pretty funny," Couples said.
