Stricker-Spieth (U.S.) def. Els-de Jonge (Int'l), 1 up

DUBLIN, Ohio -- The American duo of Steve Stricker and Jordan Spieth won a tight match against the gritty International pair of Ernie Els and Brendon de Jonge, 1 up, in Thursday's Four-ball match at The Presidents Cup.

The Americans won the first hole, then lost the second with a bogey. They regained the lad with a Stricker birdie at the third -- and held the lead the rest of the way. But they couldn't put much distance between them and the Internationals. When Els won the 17th with a birdie, the Americans were 1-up going to the 18th. But a key shot by Stricker out of a greenside bunker salvage a par to halve the hole and give the Americans the win. De Jonge, a Captain's pick, was brilliant in his first Presidents Cup, making eight birdies. Spieth, the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year and also a Captain's pick, was nearly as good with six birdies and a key birdie putt at the 15th.

Steve Stricker. Had eight birdies and produced the match-saving shot at the 18th.
