The Short Game opens Sept. 20

The Short Game, winner of the South by Southwest Film Festival's 2013 Audience Award for best documentary feature, follows the lives of eight of the top 7-year-old golfers as they train and compete in the World Championships of Junior Golf. (check out the trailer above)

The annual tournament, held at Pinehurst, N.C., brings in 1,500 young golfers from 54 different countries.

Director Josh Greenbaum visited the young golfers at their homes. One of the golfers is Allan Kournikova, the brother of tennis player Anna Kournikova. Another is Augustin Valery, grandson of poet Paul Valery.

Greenbaum told the East Hampton Star that he wanted to get to know the youngsters "not just as golfers but who they are as people, to make them feel like your little brother and little sister."

The documentary opens on Friday, Sept. 20 at select theaters, including Atlanta's Phipps Plaza 14, right down the road from the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, which takes place that same weekend.
