Hoffman leads, Mahan one back

CROMWELL, Conn. -- Charley Hoffman shot a career-best 61 Thursday in the opening round of the Travelers Championship, and that was after he broke a tooth during breakfast.

"The tooth broke at THE PLAYERS this year," Hoffman explained. "I haven't had time to go home. Got it re‑plastered a couple times, so just going to get it reglued. Nothing major, no pain or anything."

Especially after what happened here last year -- Hoffman finished double bogey-bogey to lose by one.

Thursday, he didn't make a bogey and came within one of matching the course record.

He wasn't the only player to take advantage of pristine conditions, though.

Hunter Mahan, who won here in 2007 and also finished second here a year ago after a final-round 61, shot 62 -- the same score he shot in the opening round here six years ago.

Bubba Watson, a winner here in 2010, was another stroke back after a 63 that included just his second eagle of the year.

Meanwhile, Justin Rose was happy just to get his first round since winning the U.S. Open out of the way.

Rose got off to a shaky start with three bogeys early in his round before he recovered, shooting a 67.
