Making cut a first for McIlroy

Rory McIlroy nearly holes out at the 10th hole during Friday's second round.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Rory McIlroy will start the weekend five shots off the pace in his quest for his first PLAYERS Championship. Despite shooting an even-par 72 on Friday and losing ground to the leaders after shooting 66 on Thursday, McIlroy was happy about one thing.

"I've made the cut, which I'm delighted about," he said.

Certainly that's an accomplishment in itself for McIlroy, who had missed the cut in each of his three previous appearances at THE PLAYERS.

But he was hoping for a better position on the leaderboard. Through his first six holes Friday, McIlroy was 7 under for the tournament and had yet to suffer a bogey. But then he bogeyed three consecutive holes, forcing him to recover on his back nine to finish at 6 under through 36 holes.

That puts him in a tie for 13th going into the weekend.

"Overall I felt like I played OK," he said. "I didn't play as well as I did yesterday and didn't really hole anything on the greens.

"I'm still in there and just need to get off to a good start tomorrow and get myself back in it."
