PLAYERS chances dwindling

The chances to earn a spot in the field for THE PLAYERS Championship are dwindling.

There are only three ways to join the strongest field in golf and two of those will be finalized following this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Players who are not otherwise qualified need to be inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking or the top 10 in the FedExCup standings on Sunday night when play concludes at TPC Louisiana to guarantee themselves a spot in the field.

The only other way to ensure a spot in THE PLAYERS is to win either the Zurich Classic or next week’s Wells Fargo Championship. THE PLAYERS will be played May 6-12 on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

Among the notables still hopeful of qualifying are former PLAYERS champs Stephen Ames (2006) and Justin Leonard (1998), as well as 19-year-old Jordan Spieth, Camilo Villegas and the red-hot Billy Horschel, who is riding the momentum of three straight top-10s and lives in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. All four at entered in the Zurich Classic.
