Morning update: Perez starts fast

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Pat Perez is taking advantage of pristine conditions early at Harbour Town Golf Links, where he has eight birdies through his first 14 holes of the opening round.

He had it to as low as 6 under at one point, but a double bogey on the par-5 fifth (he started on the back) after hitting into the water on his second shot has dropped Perez back to 4 under.

A half-dozen others are a shot back. That includes Webb Simpson and Jason Day, who is coming off a third-place finish at the Masters.

Perez's best finish this season, by the way, is a tie for seventh in Tampa. His low round of the year? A 63 at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
