Guthrie, Thompson share lead Honda

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- A 23-year-old shares the top spot on the leaderboard with one round to go at The Honda Classic. Just not the one anybody expected.

A day after Rory McIlroy withdrew because of tooth pain, Luke Guthrie shot a 71 and is tied with Michael Thompson at 8 under at PGA National.

Guthrie spent last season on the Web.com Tour, where he began his career while still taking classes at the University of Illinois.

It didn’t take him long to graduate to the PGA TOUR, however. Guthrie had four top 10s in his first five starts on the Web.com Tour before winning in his sixth and seventh.

Sunday, he’ll have a chance to win on an even bigger stage.

It won’t be easy considering the company behind him and Thompson.

Lee Westwood and Geoff Ogilvy are just two off the lead, while Rickie Fowler and Charles Howell III are another stroke back.

Fowler had the best finish of anyone, closing with a birdie and an eagle to shoot 69.

Y.E. Yang, meanwhile, had the day’s best score, a 3-under 67, and is four back after a windswept afternoon.

Joining Yang at 4 under are Peter Hanson, Keegan Bradley, Justin Rose and Graham DeLaet.

Tiger Woods had a chance to be in contention, too. But a late double bogey proved costly as Woods carded his third straight 70.
