Haas overtakes Mickelson at top

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Bill Haas, who trailed by two at the start of the day, now leads the Northern Trust Open.

Haas, who won the FedExCup last year, hit his driver over the green at the 10th hole, a par 4 that is playing 312 yards on Sunday, then chipped to 8 feet for his third birdie of the day.

At the same time, Phil Mickelson was in the process of making his second straight bogey, this time at the ninth hole. He drove into the left fairway bunker, hit a towering second shot short of the green and then two-putted from 18 feet.

In a testament to staying patient, Mickelson's playing partner Keegan Bradley canned a 23-footer for birdie at the same hole to get back to even par for the day. He's had three birdies and three bogeys on the adventurous front nine.

Mickelson and Bradley are tied with Jonathan Byrd at 7 under, one shot behind Haas. There are now 10 players within three shots of Haas’ lead as everyone moves to the back nine.
