Update: Crowd trying to catch leader

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Michael Thompson is still safely atop the leaderboard at Sea Island. He is still two shots clear of his nearest competitor, just like when he left the course more than three hours ago. But he’s not out of the woods yet. First-round co-leader Webb Simpson got himself on track with birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to reach 8 under, two shots behind Thompson. Also reaching that number are Ben Crane (through 12 holes) and Billy Horschel (through 8), as well as Louis Oosthuizen, who played in the morning wave. No one, other than Thompson, has gotten lower than 8 under at any point today.
