Young stars Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele add their names to a star-studded field in Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Two of the top-10 players in the world – Patrick Cantlay (No. 8) and Xander Schauffele (No. 10) – have added their names to the field for the 2019 World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational July 24-28 at TPC Southwind, tournament officials announced Wednesday. Cantlay, who won The Memorial Tournament, last month will be making his first career start in Memphis, while Schauffele will be making his first start in Memphis since 2017.
With Cantlay and Schauffele’s commitment, the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational already has four of the top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings with Dustin Johnson (No. 2), Cantlay (No. 8), Bryson DeChambeau (No. 9) and Schauffele (No. 10) committed, which is already more than double what Memphis’ PGA TOUR stop has had in previous years. FedExCup points leader Matt Kuchar is also committed in addition to 12-time PGA TOUR winner Bubba Watson, United States Ryder Cup Team member Tony Finau and 10-time PGA TOUR winner Sergio Garcia.
“The best players in the world continue to commit as we get closer to tournament week and as expected this will be the best field Memphis and the entire region has ever seen.,” said Darrell Smith, Executive Director of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. “Patrick and Xander have played at an extremely high level and we are thrilled they will be at TPC Southwind this July.”
Cantlay secured his qualification for the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational with his win at The Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide, where he held off Adam Scott for a two-shot victory. Currently ranked No. 6 in the FedExCup standings, Cantlay is enjoying a banner season on the PGA TOUR with eight top-10s in 14 starts, including a win, T2 finish at The Masters Tournament and T3 finish at the PGA Championship.
Schauffele, who is No. 4 in the FedExCup standings, has already won twice this season on the PGA TOUR with his first career WGC victory at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and a victory at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, where he closed with a final-round 62 that tied the course record. The four-time TOUR winner’s lone previous start came in 2017 with a T52 finish. Along with two victories this season, the 25-year-old also won the 2017 Greenbrier Classic and 2017 TOUR Championship on his way to a third-place finish in the 2017 FedExCup standings. In 2018, his second year on the PGA TOUR, Schauffele once again shined in golf’s biggest events with a T2 finish at THE PLAYERS Championship, T6 at the U.S. Open and T2 at The Open Championship.
Fans are reminded that the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational Father’s Day ticket offer, which includes two Good-Any-One-Day Grounds tickets and a round at TPC Southwind (Tuesday-Friday or after 1 PM CST on the weekends), remains available for a limited time for $195 plus taxes and fees.
The WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational attracts the most elite and global fields of the year as one of four World Golf Championships events on the 2018-19 PGA TOUR schedule sanctioned and organized by the International Federation of PGA Tours.
The World Golf Championships events annually attract 40-50 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings for each of the four events. With Memphis’ hometown event taking on a new identity as a World Golf Championships event, fans will be treated to a host of global superstars, some of which have never played before in Memphis. The PGA TOUR has held a tournament in Memphis every year since 1958, but 2019 will mark the first time Memphis has hosted a World Golf Championships event.
