THE PLAYERS Championship announces record $8.7 million generated for local charities from 2017 tournament
At a celebration honoring Northeast Florida charities supported by THE PLAYERS Championship, Kevin English, 2017 Tournament Chairman, today announced the 2017 tournament generated $8.7 million for local charities, surpassing last year’s record total of $8.5 million. The money generated by THE PLAYERS each year benefits more than 300 charities throughout Northeast Florida, totaling more than $92 million in charitable giving since the event moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1977. The substantial increases over the past few years are attributed to a growing, dedicated fan base; support from the 2017 event’s Proud Partners – Morgan Stanley, PwC and Optum; and the tireless and selfless efforts of the tournament’s volunteer force.
The announcement was made during THE PLAYERS Charity Celebration hosted by PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan under the lights at the 17th hole on THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, with the $8.7 million grand total displayed on a tournament scoreboard. Guests enjoyed food and drinks as they celebrated the many different ways in which the community plays a role in how THE PLAYERS impacts Northeast Florida charities.
“What THE PLAYERS has done on the charity front has been nothing short of spectacular for the Greater Jacksonville community,” said Monahan. “On behalf of the PGA TOUR, my thanks to the Proud Partners, the more than 2,000 volunteers that work tirelessly throughout the year and our fans for their tremendous support of THE PLAYERS.”
Much of the $8.7 million generated from THE PLAYERS 2017 benefits local youth charities, in line with the event’s committed goal to generate $50 million for youth-related charities over 10 years. The event is dedicated to making a significant financial impact on local non-profits that promote youth education, health and wellness, and character development. To date, $45 million has been generated toward that goal.
“The impact of THE PLAYERS on the Northeast Florida community is why nearly 2,000 volunteers put in tireless hours each year,” said Kevin English, 2017 tournament chairman. “It was my privilege to serve as the 2017 tournament chairman and I am ecstatic to see that we generated a record $8.7 million for charity through this incredible tournament.”
Tomorrow, October 18, THE PLAYERS volunteer leadership, the Red Coats, will disperse throughout Northeast Florida surprising 21 charities throughout the region as part of their annual Giving Back events.
Volunteering at THE PLAYERS is a unique avenue for not only golf fans, but also those looking to support an event that gives millions of dollars back to the community, to become a part of the team that works tirelessly to make the tournament a showcase of excellence. New volunteer registration begins January 2, 2018. Those that wish to apply to be a volunteer at THE PLAYERS this year, or that want more information, can visit THEPLAYERSvolunteers.com.
