In recognition of Veterans Day, THE PLAYERS visited Five Star Veterans Center for giving back month
Each year, money generated by THE PLAYERS Championship benefits more than 300 charities throughout northeast Florida, totaling more than $84 million since the event moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1977, including a record $8.5 million generated in 2016.
During November, THE PLAYERS celebrate giving back month with several events designed to highlight the many organizations that receive funding from THE PLAYERS.
In recognition of Veterans Day, THE PLAYERS volunteer leadership – the Red Coats – visited Five Star Veterans Center, where they hosted lunch for the center’s veterans and staff.
Five Star Veterans Center received a $5,000 grant from THE PLAYERS Red Coats this year. During lunch, THE PLAYERS Red Coats surprised Five Star Veterans Center with two new, much-needed washers and dryers and an additional $10,000 donation.
Five Star Veterans Center offers safe and secure housing to displaced veterans, in an attempt to alleviate veteran homelessness. Military residents are treated with the dignity, compassion and respect while participating in a structured “Passport to Independence” program to reintegrate them back into society.
“We are beyond surprised at this considerate gift of $10,000 in addition to the new washers and dryers,” said Colonel Len Loving (Ret.), executive director of Five Star Veterans Center. “We depend on the generosity of the community to maintain this facility. Our old washers and dryers were in desperate need of replacement, and the money will help us finish some projects around the facility that have been put off due to funding.”
“The goal of the Five Star Veterans Center is to transition our veterans back into society while helping them heal from any physical, or mental, issues caused by their time serving our country,” said Michele McManamon, THE PLAYERS 2016 tournament chairman. “Too often these men and women return home and have nowhere to go for help until they find organizations like Five Star Veterans Center. Being able to meet these brave men and women, and give back to the organization, is very rewarding.”
Upcoming Giving Back Month events include vists to Pine Castle (November 14), North Shore Elementary School (November 21) and Topgolf with The Boselli Foundation (November 30).
