T-Minus-18 days until the top-125 players arrive
It’s been quite the week for THE NORTHERN TRUST. If you’re wondering why we chose to add an “h” to our week, it’s because of our epic media day with Whee Kim on Monday at The Ridgewood Country Club!
Fresh off his T2 finish at the RBC Canadian Open, Korean PGA TOUR player Whee Kim joined representatives from The First Tee, Tackle Kids Cancer (our tournament’s official charity) and members of the media for a million-dollar charity shootout at Ridgewood’s famous “Five and Dime” hole, the drivable par-4 12th hole.
While no one made a hole-in-one (although Whee crushed it, despite only getting three hours of sleep), the morning ended on a very exciting note, as Kelly Mannard, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer at Northern Trust, surprised Tackle Kids Cancer and The First Tee by announcing Northern Trust would donate an additional $25,000 to each organization (our title sponsor rocks, just sayin’). This donation was in addition to the record $1.8 million THE NORTHERN TRUST generated from our 2017 event , bringing our event’s all-time total to $48 million since inception. That deserves much more than a golf clap. Pictured below is Whee Kim with members of various chapters of The First Tee who attended the media day festivities.
The charity shootout was just the start of our week. We skipped across the Hudson River on Monday night for a little fun in Soho to preview our tournament’s food and drink partners. Check it out, and keep reading to hear about what else THE NORTHERN TRUST was up to this week. And, of course…cheers to the weekend!
Each year we strive to make an even bigger difference in the communities where we play. 2018 is no exception, so we’re excited to bring back the “Birdies to Benefit Tackle Kids Cancer” program for the second year. Fans can help us raise money by taking part in a friendly competition (who doesn’t love a little healthy competition?) to raise money for critical research and programs at the Children’s Cancer Institute at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Here’s how it works:
1. Pledge a donation through PledgeIt via the following link. 2. Choose a donation amount per birdie based on the total number of birdies that will be made during competition rounds of THE NORTHERN TRUST. 3. All proceeds go to The Children’s Cancer Institute at Hackensack Meridian Health.
With an estimated 1,200 birdies expected over the course of this year’s tournament, a pledge of one dime would amount to a $120 donation. #everycentcounts
Here’s a fun fact to kick off your weekend (and impress your friends with some PGA TOUR knowledge): Did you know that PGA TOUR players hail from 27 countries, and 88 of our members are from outside the United States? Our tournaments are also broadcast to more than 1 billion households in 226 countries and territories in 23 languages. We represent the world’s best players, so it only makes sense to mirror this international flair with some international flavors at THE NORTHERN TRUST.
We are excited to announce that, for the first time in THE NORTHERN TRUST’s history, Korean flavors will be served on site via a Korean-inspired grab-and-go food area—Share Korean Flavor by CJ Bibigo.
CJ is Korea’s #1 lifestyle company and represents the latest and hottest in Korean culture. It founded Bibigo in 2010 in an effort to take 5000 years of delicious cuisine and update it for today’s modern, non-stop lifestyles. CJ will be using an array of Bibigo’s products to create a unique menu that is only available at THE NORTHERN TRUST all week, with dishes like Korean fried chicken bites, Crispy Korean Mandu and Mini Wontons with beer, Bibimbap and Bulgogi tacos. Did anyone say, “YUM?!”
Two-time FedExCup champion Tiger Woods and reigning champion Justin Thomas have officially committed to play in THE NORTHERN TRUST. Paramus may be known for being the retail capital of the world, but we agree with Mayor LaBarbiera when he said he hopes it becomes the golf capital of the world. Mayor, we think your wish may come true.
Tiger Woods – 79-time PGA TOUR winner; only two-time winner of the FedExCup – Tiger Woods is back in the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time since 2013. The 79-time PGA TOUR winner has made incredible moves in the FedExCup standings this season, from as low as No. 179 to cracking the top-50 and putting himself in prime position to become the only three-time winner of the FedExCup. Of the four times Woods has played in THE NORTHERN TRUST (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013), he has finished no worse than T38 (2012). Time to get PGA TOUR win #80 right here in Bergen County, TW.
Justin Thomas – 8-time PGA TOUR winner; 2017 FedExCup champion and Player of the Year – After an unbelievable 2016-17 campaign that included five wins, the FedExCup and Player of the Year honors, Thomas carried over his dominant play into this season, winning his second start—THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES—in a playoff over Marc Leishman. In 17 starts this season, Thomas has six top-10 and one runner-up finish, along with two victories. He has not ranked worse than No. 9 in the FedExCup standings and enters the Bridgestone Invitational this week in the No. 2 position.
The reigning FedExCup champion has a strong track record at THE NORTHERN TRUST. His three consecutive starts from 2015-2017 produced one top-20 and two top-10 finishes. He has yet to compete at The Ridgewood Country Club. It’s ready for you, J.T.
We’ll leave you with this clip of Open Championship winner Francesco Molinari chatting with Humpty & Canty of ESPN NY on Wednesday. At No. 7 in the standings, Molinari has a great chance of becoming the first Italian to win the FedExCup. He’s also looking to redeem himself after back-to-back missed cuts at THE NORTHERN TRUST in 2016 and 2017.
