Thanks to dark monochromatic looks and sporty wrap-around sunglasses, Henrik Stenson has created a signature look for himself on the course that is stylish, and at times, intimidating.
His sporty shades are much more than a fashion accessory, though. Having battled allergies to pollen and sensitivity to sunlight, Stenson’s sunglasses have been instrumental to his success on the course. Thanks to his special requirements and experience, the No. 4 player in the world has gained a substantial amount of knowledge when it comes to eyewear technology. As a result, the reigning Open Champion and 2013 FedEx Cup Champion has added ‘Eyewear Entrepreneur’ to his resumé with the recent launch of the Henrik Stenson Eyewear brand.
Stenson’s label will feature three different collections – performance, street, and optical, and he has been closely involved in the development of the lenses and frames. In fact, his involvement and feedback directly led to the development of Powereye™, a special lens technology found in the performance collection. This technology is said to provide complete protection from Blue light and UV radiation while reducing glare and helping to prevent eye fatigue.
In addition to the protection provided by the Powereye technology, it also offers performance benefits, as well. The lens heightens contrast to give the terrain on fairways and greens more pop while maintaining natural color balance.
The Performance Collection includes four models. The single-lens wrap-around style carries Stenson’s nickname (the Iceman) and is expected to be his go-to choice on the course. Joining the Iceman is a dual-lens wrap-around style (the Stinger), a framed design (the Torque), and a junior version of the Iceman. Rubber temples, ear tips, and nose pads create a comfortable fit and help to keep the frames from sliding during the swing. Accessory lenses are available for the Stinger and both Iceman models, allowing the lenses and frames to be swapped for different conditions and to match various outfits.
"I know how important it is to protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that are suited to the task. Playing golf means exposure to hazardous sunlight and reflections for hours at a time so eye protection is essential, especially for children. With this in mind, we are also developing a special performance collection designed specifically for junior players," said Stenson.
The style and performance of Stenson’s eyewear go well beyond the Performance Collection. The glasses in the Street and Optical Collections are as fashionable as any that you will find from the designer labels. Both collections include classic wayfarer, round, and square designs with frames ranging from lightweight titanium to wooden and tortoise shell finishes.
