If the skies open up at Hazeltine during the 2016 Ryder Cup, Team Europe will combat the elements with revolutionary rain jackets and pants from Swedish brand Galvin Green.
Long known as a provider of stylish and functional rain gear and outerwear, Galvin Green was tabbed by European Captain Darren Clarke to create four exclusive lines of weatherwear for the competition. The most advanced of those pieces is a 3-layer waterproof full-zip jacket comprised of a flexible outer shell, a GORE-TEX® membrane, and an innovative Japanese-made C-KNIT™ backer.
This breakthrough C-KNIT technology has never been seen on the fairways before. It spent six years in development and is fabricated from very thin, lightweight yarns. The result is a jacket that checks in at a mere 260 grams to provide a feathery layer of protection. The jacket is also said to be more durable and to possess a softer hand-feel than typical rain gear. Most importantly, though, is what Galvin Green is calling the ‘slide and glide’ feature that allows the jacket to easily be worn over base and/or mid-layers without sacrificing range of motion.
This state-of-the-art rain jacket is more than just a high-tech garment. It brings some serious style to the Europeans’ wardrobe, too. The clean color-blocked design of the jacket is modern and sporty. The contrasting zipper adds a pop of color to the front, while the tone-on-tone sleeves and sides provide an added level of sophistication.
To complement the jacket, Galvin Green is also outfitting the team with matching waterproof trousers that include the same GORE-TEX fabric and C-KNIT backer. While most rain pants have zippers at the sides, Europe’s Ryder Cup rain trousers have two long leg openings with water-repellant zippers at the back. The pants are also finished with white trim on the front and back pockets for a smart look.
Manufacturing these rain jackets and pants is no easy feat. According to Galvin Green, it takes a team of 31 highly specialized operators to make one Ryder Cup jacket. This includes one person to handle the embroidery, one person to check the taping of the seams, one person to pack the jackets, and a small team to cut the individual pieces of fabric.
In addition to the rain suit, Galvin Green is also outfitting Team Europe with a new soft shell 3-layer GORE® WINDSTOPPER® full-zip jacket. This will be the most versatile outerwear piece that the Europeans wear at Hazeltine, as it is windproof, water-repellent, and highly breathable.
