Jason Dufner is set to defend his PGA Championship this week in his own unique, laid back style. Our Style Insider got the inside scoop on Dufner's PGA TOUR apparel script at Valhalla from Lupe Benitez, vice president of Design, Golf at Perry Ellis International. Read about Dufner's influence on the styles, his penchant for patterned pants and more:
Style Insider: From a style standpoint, what can we expect from Jason Dufner when he defends his PGA Championship at Valhalla?
Lupe Benitez: We wanted Jason to have a classic look but with a modern aesthetic. He'll be wearing looks from our PGA TOUR Pro Series collection for Fall 2014. The palette is grounded in dark and gray hues which serve as a background to a single bright color accent, either brilliant blue or vibrant green.
SI: Walk us through the process of creating Jason’s script. How did his personal style and preferences influence the design and selection of the pieces?
LB: This is our second year working with Jason and his personal style is represented in all of the outfits we script for him. PGA Tour Pro Series is mainly based on prints and at the beginning of each season Jason tells us exactly which prints he will wear and the kind of pants he wants to wear them with. He loves patterns in pants as well as lots of color. He's very confident in his personal style and isn't afraid to take risks.
SI: Argyle is a pattern that is closely tied to the game golf. Jason is scripted to wear a polo on Thursday and Saturday with an argyle pattern. Talk a little bit about the design of this shirt.
LB: For this particular group in the Pro Series, we were inspired by digital effects and the way light is perceived through a computer screen. We wanted to utilize classic patterns like argyles, regimental stripes, and even heathers but update them with diffused and fragmented patterned effects.
SI: Jason is also scripted to wear polos on Friday and Sunday that possess a 'heathered' look. Can you explain what is meant by the term heathered? Aesthetically, what do heathered fabrics add to an outfit?
LB: Heathers are fabrics made of yarns that create a multi-color speckled effect. Aesthetically, they make the garment more interesting, Traditionally heathers have been made in natural fibers like cotton and wool.
We have seen an explosion of synthetic heathers in the golf and active market in the past few years. We wanted to update this look by creating a heather effect with actual pattern. The polo Jason will be wearing on Friday is what we call the Matrix Two-Tone Heather. It's actually a jacquard that creates a fragmented heather look by utilizing different stitching techniques. The polo he will be wearing on Sunday is actually heather yarn with a regimental stripe printed with a sublimation technique that creates a gradient effect. Again, this follows the idea of using classic and traditional patterns with modern techniques, but in an elegant subtle way without being so in your face.
SI: The players are likely to be greeted with hot and humid conditions at Valhalla. Which fabrics have you selected for Jason and how will these help him to stay cool?
LB: All our fabrics have moisture management and UPF protection that keep you cool and comfortable in hot and humid conditions. Some of the polos Jason will be wearing have PGA TOUR Apparel "Air Flux" which is our newest ventilated performance feature. All of our pants have moisture management, UPF 50 and mechanical stretch.
SI: What is your favorite look of the week from Jason’s script? Why?
LB: I think his Sunday outfit is the most eye-catching and updated. His Saturday outfit, with the digital argyle printed polo and brilliant blue pants, represent what the PGA TOUR Apparel Fall '14 collection is about, which is re-inventing the classics.
