PGATOUR.COM Fantasy Columnist Rob Bolton lists five against-the-grain fantasy selections to consider for this week's FedEx St. Jude Classic.
Jerry Kelly ... With top 20s in three of his last five starts (and no worse than a T30 in that stretch), he belongs on our radar, anyway. He's also a match on paper, slotted 15th in fairways hit, second in scrambling and 13th in bogey avoidance. Go ahead and toss on that he's first in par-3 scoring, which never hurts, but his only top 30 in 10 tries at TPC Southwind occurred way back in 1999.
Lucas Glover ... Now in the final season of a multi-year exemption sparked by his U.S. Open title in 2009, he's still having tremendous difficulty getting the ball into the hole, but his ball-striking remains a reliable weapon. On TPC Southwind greens that are below average in size, that gives him an edge. The marksman is currently seventh in greens in regulation and sixth in proximity. He's also strung together five cuts made for the first time since concluding the 2011 season with the same.
Jon Curran ... Like most, especially fellow rookies, he's run into stretches of disappointment that the optimistic chalk up to the learning curve, but the 28-year-old has also scattered four top 10s, including a T6 in his last start at the AT&T Byron Nelson Championship where he ranked T2 in greens in regulation. For the season, he's 25th in fairways hit, 56th in GIR and 29th in scrambling. Also T6 in proximity to the hole and 16th in bogey avoidance.
Bryce Molder ... It's easy to forget about him because his only notable finish of the season occurred in the opening event. A T3 at the Frys.com Open is his only top 10, but he's added three top 25s in his just last seven starts and rolls in with five consecutive cuts made. Currently 14th in strokes gained: putting, 11th in scrambling and 40th in bogey avoidance. Also a former co-runner-up at TPC Southwind (2009) with a T24 as well in 2012.
Tommy Gainey ... After losing his PGA TOUR card following last season, he's back on the Web.com Tour and ranks 40th in earnings with three top 10s. That includes a T8 at the inaugural Greater Dallas Open last week where he led with an opening, bogey-free 63. This is his sixth appearance at TPC Southwind. Recorded a personal-best T32 last year.
