Phil Mickelson hit 11 of 18 greens in regulation during his first round at the Safeway Open, finishing at 3 over for the tournament. Mickelson finished his day tied for 126th at 3 over; Andrew Landry and Adam Scott are tied for 1st at 7 under; Francesco Molinari and Matthew NeSmith are tied for 3rd at 6 under; and Adam Long, Cameron Champ, and Chris Baker are tied for 5th at 5 under.
On the 538-yard par-5 fifth, Mickelson had a quadruple bogey after hitting the green in 7 and two putting. This dropped Mickelson to 4 over for the day.
At the 417-yard par-4 sixth, Mickelson reached the green in 2 and rolled a 38-foot putt for birdie. This put Mickelson at 3 over for the round.
Mickelson's tee shot went 219 yards to the left greenside bunker and his bunker shot went 11 yards to the green where he had a two-putt for bogey on the 212-yard par-3 seventh. This moved Mickelson to 4 over for the round.

After a 252 yard drive on the 375-yard par-4 17th, Mickelson chipped his third shot to 8 feet, which he rolled for two-putt bogey on the hole. This moved Mickelson to 4 over for the round.
On the 575-yard par-5 18th hole, Mickelson reached the green in 3 and sunk a 23-foot putt for birdie. This moved Mickelson to 3 over for the round.
