In his first round at the the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide, Rory McIlroy hit 8 of 14 fairways and 10 of 18 greens in regulation, finishing at 2 over for the tournament. McIlroy finished his day tied for 74th at 2 over; Hideki Matsuyama, Joaquin Niemann, and Abraham Ancer are tied for 1st at 7 under; Beau Hossler is in 4th at 6 under; and Grayson Murray, Jamie Lovemark, Kyle Stanley, and Lucas Glover are tied for 5th at 5 under.
On the par-par-4 sixth, McIlroy's 118 yard approach to 4 feet set himself up for the birdie on the hole. This moved McIlroy to 1 under for the round.
On the 185-yard par-3 eighth, McIlroy's tee shot went 205 yards to the rear greenside bunker and his sand shot went 10 yards to the green where he rolled a two-putt for bogey. This moved him to even-par for the round.
After a drive to the right side of the fairway on the 455-yard par-4 13th hole, McIlroy had a 150 yard approach shot, setting himself up for the birdie. This moved McIlroy to 1 under for the round.
At the 363-yard par-4 14th, McIlroy got on in 3 and missed his bogey putt from 3 feet, finishing with a 3-putt double bogey. This moved McIlroy to 1 over for the round.
McIlroy had a penalty on the 484-yard par-4 18th. He reached the green in three and finished with a two-putt bogey. This moved McIlroy to 2 over for the day.
