Happy Birthday to PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf driven by AVIS!
PGATOUR.COM’s newest fantasy game launched at THE PLAYERS Championship in 2015. While the shelf life of any fantasy game is largely irrelevant to gamers’ decisions on a weekly basis, there are a couple of usable options now available as a result of this week’s occasion.
First, when navigating “My Teams” to view all of your previous picks and points scored, results from last season’s tournament can be reviewed and compared to your results from the current. For the most dedicated gamers, diving into any nuance might be valuable. Remember, we’re always learning.
The other connection to last year’s edition of THE PLAYERS and all tournaments contested thereafter in 2014-15 that have yet to be played this season can be found when forming your roster. On the “SELECT A GOLFER” page, when you click on any golfer, results of “Last Tournaments Played” and “Current Tournament – 2015” appear. For example, 2015 PLAYERS champion totaled 386 points in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf driven by AVIS. He may need to win again to hang up that kind of number this week, but at least you know what he’s capable of achieving at TPC Sawgrass beyond mastering his tee ball at the par-3 17th hole.
As it concerns this week’s distribution among gamers, there are a couple of the usual mild surprises, not the least of which is the strong support for Bubba Watson (30.4 percent) and Dustin Johnson (24.5 percent), both of whom are in the top 10 below. Meanwhile, former champion Phil Mickelson checks up in 14th place with 12.3 percent. I agree with the relative coolness for the lefty, but it should also apply to the other two bombers on this track. All three will be anchoring other lineups in Segment 3, so TPC Sawgrass is a smart spot to abstain.
Also not featured in either table below is 2015 co-runner-up Kevin Kisner, who ranks 17th in shares with 8.4 percent. I wrote in this space just last week that I don’t understand that affinity of late. He’s been in a massive slump. What’s more, despite rising to fourth in ownership percentage at the RBC Heritage a month ago, he failed to validate his P2 at last year’s edition, finishing T69. While PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf driven by AVIS isn’t entirely a results-based format, you can draw light parallels to overall success in both reality and fantasy.
Hope is forever necessary in fantasy golf, but within reason, gang. Within reason.
