HUMBLE, Texas – Defending champion J.B. Holmes withdrew from the Shell Houston Open on Wednesday because of a shoulder injury.
Holmes won last year’s event in a playoff with Jordan Spieth and Johnson Wagner. He was scheduled to tee off at 1:10 p.m. with Spieth and Patrick Reed. Holmes was replaced in the group by Luke List, who is No. 98 in the FedExCup.
Holmes had finished no worse than T12 in his past three appearances at the Golf Club of Houston, and was runner-up at this event in 2009. He has five top-25 finishes in seven starts this season, highlighted by T6 finishes at the Farmers Insurance Open and Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Holmes, No. 23 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is in the field for next week’s Masters Tournament.
