AMARILLO, Texas -- Investigators say a traffic accident in the Texas Panhandle has killed the 71-year-old father of professional golfer Ryan Palmer.
Charles Franklin "Butch" Palmer of Amarillo died Tuesday night in the SUV rollover wreck.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says the accident happened about two miles north of Amarillo. The elder Palmer was northbound on State Loop 335 when for unknown reasons his vehicle left the road.
DPS says Butch Palmer overcorrected, then lost control of the SUV, which rolled several times. He was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the SUV and died at the scene.
The younger Palmer, who is currently No. 37 in the Official World Golf Ranking, released the following statement:
"Our family is heartbroken about the loss of an amazing husband, father, grandparent, and friend. My dad was an inspiration to all of us, and was such a major part of every aspect of our lives. We greatly appreciate your prayers and graciously ask for privacy to grieve during this difficult time. I will spend time with my family over the next few days and plan to compete next week in the FedExCup Playoffs at The Barclays."
A private memorial service is planned for Friday at Amarillo Baptist Church.
