With golf returning to the Olympics in 2016, the 2015-16 PGA TOUR schedule will look drastically different than most years.
Thursday, some of that schedule became a little clearer with the Travelers Championship announcing next year’s tournament will be played Aug. 4-7.
Typically, the event is played the third week in June after the U.S. Open. Next year, it will take place the week after the PGA Championship at Baltusrol in New Jersey.
“Golf’s return to the Olympics for the first time since 1904 will affect the majority of PGA TOUR events taking place from June through August,” tournament director Nathan Grube said. “By working closely with the PGA TOUR, we identified the best timing for recruiting a strong player field and finishing the planned modifications to TPC River Highlands.”
Next year’s date will allow for the completion of a multi-million dollar course project at TPC River Highlands that will include new areas for grandstands and fan viewing around the final four holes, modifications to greens, and renovations to bunkers throughout the course.
“We’re already looking forward to another great tournament that will generate significant funds for charity in 2016,” added Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for Travelers. “With the 2016 PGA Championship in New Jersey the week before our event, we’re expecting the 2016 Travelers Championship field to be as strong as ever.”
