So Bill, how did you get to be the new Barclays 2011 Volunteer Coordinator??

Well last summer, I took a bit of a sabbatical from my job to volunteer at several golf tournaments in the area, to try to get to know people in the industry and see if it was something I'd like to get involved in. After the first couple of tournaments, specifically the LPGA Sybase Match Play and the LPGA Shoprite Classic, I was hooked and knew it was a career for me. In August, I was lucky enough to volunteer for three weeks on The Barclays office administration committee, where I got to know everyone involved in the tournament office, and five months later, here I am!

What did you do before The Barclays Volunteer Coordinator gig??

For the past nine and a half years, I worked as an accountant at KPMG LLP (Go Phil!), first in Audit for four years and then in Mergers and Acquisitions for the next five and a half years. For the first eight years, I worked in our Boston office and then transferred to the New York office.

Boston and New York ... who did you root for??

I was born and raised in Cranford, N.J., (not too far from Plainfield CC), so I bleed Yankee Blue. I must admit it was difficult to live in Boston and watch the Sox finally win it all in 2004 and then again in 2007. It was definitely part of the reason that drove me to transfer to New York in 2009!

Why the big career change??

While I enjoyed my time at KPMG, working with great people and traveling the country, I knew for quite a while that I didn't want accounting to be my career. I have always had a great passion for golf and almost still can't believe that I am actually working for The Barclays right now, pursuing my dream!

What are you looking forward to most at The Barclays this year??

I really just can't wait until volunteer registration opens on Feb. 14, and I get to start meeting all the volunteers. As a volunteer last year, I hope I have some extra knowledge about how best to ensure all our great volunteers have an excellent time at the 2011 Barclays. I know I have some big shoes to fill taking the wheel from Katelyn, but I will certainly try my best.

So we heard a rumor that you are a reality TV star; care to comment??

Oh boy. Yes, that rumor is in fact correct. I was on the 2004 NBC show "Average Joe: Hawaii". I was in a bar in Boston and apparently made a good impression on the NBC talent scouts there. After an audition the next day, I somehow found myself on a plane to Hawaii a couple months later. It was a fantastic time, and I met some really great people who were also on the show. Also, in case anyone saw the show, rest assured I was one of the "Average Joes" and not one of the models they brought in later!
