SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- Rocco Mediate has not won on TOUR since 2002, that's eight years without a win. So, why is he playing better? Rocco switched back to a 34-inch putter and got some advice from Lee Trevino. The Merry Mex helped him hit a controlled fade and Rocco has found 23 of 28 fairways and 28 of 36 greens.

Will MacKenzie is having to multitask this week. He's trying to win, he's trying to make the top 125 to secure his playing privileges for 2011 and he's trying to quit using smokeless tobacco. Will pops fireball jawbreakers into his mouth to help offset the nicotine cravings. So far, it's a good week. Will is 8-under par and tobacco-free. Pass the jawbreakers, please.

• Titleist has a new model Pro V1 that has found its way into the bags of 20 players this week. The new ball has fewer dimples and a tighter dispersion pattern. Sorry, the new model won't make it's way into retail stores until spring 2011.
