  • PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida (November 21)—In January, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica will do something it hasn’t done since its inaugural season. Among its four Qualifying Tournaments will be an event in Buenos Aires, Argentina, open only to Latin American players. Since that 2012 event, all PGA TOUR Latinoamérica Qualifying Tournaments have been open to players from any country. This year, only three of the four Qualifying Tournaments will follow the previous pattern, welcoming players of all nationalities. These four tournaments will help determine the 2020 Tour membership.

The four 2020 sites will be Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., and Weston Hills Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with both tournaments happening simultaneously January 7-10; Estrella del Mar in Mazatlán, Mexico (January 14-17); and Cañuelas Golf Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina (January 28-31).

Each 2020 Qualifying Tournament is a 72-hole, stroke-play, no-cut tournament, with fields of 132 players. The Latino-only Qualifying Tournament in Buenos Aires is limited to players from the following Latin American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela.

In 2012, Colombia’s Andrés Echavarría was the medalist at the Latino-only qualifier at Hurlingham Club in Buenos Aires, a tournament that featured 86 entrants.

“This is a significant move for PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and for golf in this part of the world. We want to continue developing world-class golfers from Central and South America and having a Latino-only Qualifying Tournament will make it easier on these players from a travel and cost standpoint,” said Jack Warfield, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica President. “History has shown that our Qualifying Tournament fields are competitive and filled with ambitious, talented players, with many of those who do qualify for Tour membership going on to success on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and beyond.”

Applicants can register here beginning November 26 at 9 a.m. EST.

“We have been holding these Qualifying Tournaments since the Tour’s inception, in 2012, and every year a player or players have made their presence felt in the regular season. That’s what makes the tournaments so great. We are providing these players with an opportunity to pursue their career goals,” Warfield continued. “There is so much golf talent throughout the world, and it is very heartening to know that players can come to us, qualify for the Tour and then begin putting their talent and skill on display at first-rate tournaments played on high-quality golf courses.”

In 2019, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica Qualifying Tournament winners were Americans Neal Ajubita, Jacob Bergeron and Patrick Flavin and Uruguay’s Juan Alvarez. Flavin went on to win the Bupa Match Play, and he is currently No. 9 on the Order of Merit with one tournament remaining in the 2019 season.
