MANAGUA, Nicaragua – PGA TOUR Latinoamérica will make its first visit ever to Nicaragua next September for the inaugural playing of the Flor de Caña Open presented by The Mortgage Store. This new event was launched during a press conference held on Wednesday in the capital city of Managua.
The tournament will be held at Guacalito de la Isla, a world class venue located on the shores of Nicaragua’s stunning Emerald Coast – about 75 miles south of Managua.
The Flor de Caña Open week will start with a Monday Qualifier to be played in Managua’s Nejapa Country Club on August 29. Ten successful entrants from the qualifier will complete a 144-man field set to battle for the title at the David McLay Kidd designed golf course at Guacalito de la Isla starting on September 1st.
A professional tournament of this caliber is a first in Nicaragua, which becomes the fourth Central American nation to join PGA TOUR Latinoamérica. The Tour already has tournaments in Panama and Guatemala, which joined in 2014, and Honduras, which made its debut last year.
“We feel very honored for this opportunity the PGA TOUR has given us to have a PGA TOUR Latinoamérica event in Nicaragua. It’s an event that will definitely put our country on the international golf map,” said Gustavo Betancourt, the golf director at Guacalitos de la Isla.Tournament authorities during the press conference held in Managua on Wednesday. Attending the press conference to announce the event on Wednesday, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica president Jack Warfield provided the Nicaraguan media insight into this new venture.
“We started discussions to have this event two years ago and we are very happy we’ve come to this day”, Warfield said. “The golf course at Guacalito de la Isla is on par with the very best golf courses we play on this Tour. We know that our players, who are becoming some of the best emerging players in the world, are going to enjoy it. We are looking forward to a wonderful event to launch the start of what we hope is going to be a long term relationship”.
The Tour president sat next to local authorities and sponsors, including Renato Palazio, a Nicaragua Sugar Estate Limited board member and also a member of the tournament organizing committee, Mauricio Solórzano, Flor de Caña Global Brand ambassador, Ricardo Selva, Flor de Caña commercial director, Eddy Marín, Mortgage Store CEO, and Gustavo Betancourt, golf director at Guacalitos de la Isla.
As host of the Flor de Caña Open, Nicaragua becomes the 14th Latin American country to welcome an official PGA TOUR Latinoamérica event.
Entering its fifth season and providing a pathway to the Web.com Tour for the up-and-coming players competing in the region, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica is currently present in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico and Uruguay.
