  • ANTIGUA GUATEMALA, Guatemala – Danny Balin of Greenwich, Connecticut was declared the winner of the Guatemala Stella Artois Open when thunderstorms moved into La Reunión Golf Resort on Sunday afternoon to force the cancelation of the fourth round.

    Balin was playing the ninth hole of the final round and was tied for the lead with Marcelo Rozo of Bogota, Colombia, who was at 16-under through 17, when play was called for the day at 4:04 p.m. 

    By the time play got suspended it was clear that the round couldn’t resume. The standings were reverted back to 54 holes. 

    Balin had carded Sunday’s only bogey-free round earlier in the day, a 6-under 66 that ended up securing the title. He finished the week at 15-under par 201 to claim his first PGA TOUR Latinoamérica win at the stunning Fuego Maya Golf Course.

    The 33-year old champion won by four strokes over Eric Dugas of Brewster, Massachusetts, who shot 67 on Sunday. Dugas, 32, was the only player to post three rounds in the sixties this week.

    Martin Trainer of Palo Alto, California, 68, and Anthony Paolucci of Dallas, Texas, 70, joined Lins Gillgren of Onsalo, Sweden, 70, in a tie for the third spot.

    Starting on the first group that teed off from No. 10 at 6:20 a.m., Marcelo Rozo played some inspired golf on Sunday. He carded a week low 8-under 64 in round three to finish in a five-way tie for sixth and claim the OHL Round of the Week Award.

    In an effort that wouldn’t count because of the cancelation of the final round, Rozo kept his superb pace shooting 7-under through 17 holes to tie Balin for the lead in the afternoon round.
