SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Ty Tryon hadn't played a Web.com Tour event since 2012, but that didn't stop him from attempting to qualify for this week's inaugural Savannah Golf Championship.
The persistence paid off, as the former teen phenom shot 5-under 67 at The Landings Club (Oakridge) to secure a spot this week at the The Landings Club's Deer Creek layout.
Tryon, who famously qualified for the PGA TOUR as a high school junior via the 2001 Qualifying Tournament, made seven birdies and two bogeys in Monday's qualifier, good enough to secure a tee time Thursday at Deer Creek.
In all, 262 players signed a scorecard in Monday's qualifier, vying for just 12 available spots this week.
Nathan Stamey of Canton, North Carolina, earned medalist honors at Oakridge, posting a 6-under 66 that included four birdies and an eagle. The University of North Carolina-Greensboro alum will be making his fourth career Web.com Tour start, hoping to make his first cut.
Also advancing from Oakridge were Hunter Stewart, Chip Deason, Mike Van Sickle and Wehman Hopke. All matched Tryon at 5-under 67.
Veteran Steven Alker earned medalist honors at the Palmetto GC site, shooting 5-under 67 to secure a spot in the field at Deer Creek. The New Zealand native, 46, made four birdies and an eagle against just one bogey. He has earned four Web.com Tour titles, most recently the 2014 Cleveland Open.
Joining Alker as successful qualifiers at Palmetto GC were local favorite Tim O'Neal (68), Andrew Novak (69), Brian Campbell (69), Brett Melton (69) and Ryan McCormick (69). The latter four all survived a 7-for-4 playoff.
